Children and Teens: Individual and Family Counseling
In working with children and teens it is our philosophy that the best way to support and provide services to children and adolescents is to support and strengthen the family. In our practice, we recognize the importance of family participation in the treatment process. In working with young children we understand that Play therapy is the most effective avenue of therapeutic services. Play therapy for young children is an evidenced based treatment modality for young children as it utilizes their language and a natural way for them to process, communicate and heal.
Tweens and adolescents often benefit from more creative, artistic and expressive approaches. These approaches provide more natural ways to allow younger individuals to express their feelings, thoughts and concerns in a natural, creative and comfortable manner. These tactics help them grow, think and heal in more flexible manners, which enhances their resilience to manage the difficult challenges in life.
Parenting is one of the most amazing gifts, however it also comes with challenges, frustrations and self doubts. Our practice works to assist parents in being able to navigate the challenges of parenting and working on helping them develop healthier relationships with these children, strategies that assist the parents in empowering their children and education to understand the developmental concerns for their children. Parenting involvement may be period caregiver check in sessions to weekly therapy addressing more complicated issues. Each treatment plan is individualized to each child and their family.
Adults: Individual, Couples and Marital Counseling
In working with adults, this practice recognizes the importance of utilizing a more holistic approach, working to assist individuals in growing in all spheres of development, emotionally, physically, interpersonally, mentally, spiritually and behaviorally. We recognize the importance of supporting the development and growth of all of these avenues. We as a practice create a non judgement space where individuals feelings, emotions and thoughts are honored. We work to assist individuals seeing their own gifts and strengths. Our goals include helping individuals increase their confidence and self insight, decrease anxiety and depression, and improve their capacity to build and connect in healthy relationships.
Consultation with Certified Autism Specialist
These consultations are specialized to the needs of the participant. The consultation could assist a parent who has just found out that their child is on the Autism Spectrum. In this situation, the specialist may focus on the First Steps of intervention, connecting the parents with all the appropriate referrals. Education would be provided regarding basic topics such as what questions to ask your pediatrician or a school teacher. This consultation may be used for more specific uses such as coming up with a behavior plan to address specific behaviors that a child may have that the parents are not sure of how to best approach. Topics may include a wide variety of issues including: introduction to school, dietary concerns, potty training, how to approach sexuality and many other challenging issues.
Educational Seminars for Screen Addiction
Blue River Counseling will provide a 60 minute seminar to deliver education to parents regarding how to address issues of screen time with their children and teens. This program was developed from the Screen Strong Ambassador Organization. The goal of this presentation is to help families struggling with screen addiction.
